Putting cuts in perspective

RE 'CUTS shutter centers for former prisoners,' Hampton Roads, front page, Dec. 28: 230 violent felons feel the 'rug's been pulled out from under them'? How is this front-page news?

Just weeks ago, a much more devastating budget cut barely made it to the back page. I'm referring to the possible closure of Southeastern Virginia Training Center in Chesapeake, which serves up to 200 people with intellectual disabilities. All of these residents will be losing their home and will be separated from their friends, as well as their caregivers, many of whom they've been with for years. Unlike the probationers highlighted on the front page, the people at SEVTC are truly helpless victims of the current budget cut. And while I'm sorry that eight probation officers had to be reassigned as a result of closing day-reporting centers, it hardly compares to the 470 SEVTC employees who will be unemployed as of July 1. Where is their headline?
