NO. 9 | DEJOR SIMMONS
IN SUMMARY | WHAT MAKES Simmons GREAT
Simmons is the last in a long list of talented brothers to star in South Hampton Roads. And all his brothers – Deveon, Kevin and Tavon Gatlin – were first-team All-Tidewater players.
Simmons, who last season was a first-team All-Tidewater selection, is a speedster and big-time playmaker. He is the defending Group AAA state champion in the 100 meters and has the ability to take the ball to the house every time he touches it. He’s also got heart.
“The one thing about him is that he will compete,” Stallions coach Shawn Wilson said, “because like his brothers, he doesn’t like to lose.”
The only thing Simmons doesn’t have is size. Simmons uses his small size to hide behind the offensive line. Once he gets outside or in the open field, he’s dangerous because he has a knack for making defenders miss.
Last season he rushed for 1,105 yards and scored 21 touchdowns. One recruiting site ranks him as the No. 7 all-purpose running back in the country. What also will help his stock is his ability as a punt and kickoff returner and his 3.2 grade point average.
