Last week, we shared three of the recipes that won members of The Pilot’s Dream Team ribbons at the State Fair of Virginia in the quick breads division. We have more instructions this week: the third-place finisher in the fruit or nut bread category and the second-place recipe in the biscuit category.
The members of The Pilot’s Dream Team of bakers rose to the occasion at the State Fair of Virginia, and now you can try to replicate their success with quick breads in your own kitchen. The team won five ribbons, and today we present three of the award-winning recipes: the cornbread winner and the second- and third-place finishers in batter bread.
Call them the upper crust – the 11 members of The Virginian-Pilot’s Dream Team who put their best pies forward last week at the State Fair of Virginia. Competing in 10 categories, the Dream Team brought home seven ribbons. Now you can taste their luscious treats, but you’ll have to bake them yourself. Here are the recipes from each member of the Dream Team:

When Angie Wheeler decided to enter The Virginian-Pilot's 2009 Dream Team competition, she chose the bar cookie category. The Suffolk resident figured it would allow her the versatility to develop something unique and delicious.
Dream Teamer Nancy Zeitman took first place at the State Fair of Virginia this year for her sugar-free cookies. Her winners are based on a sugar cookie recipe that a friend gave to her years ago.

Today, we have Francie Rayburn's chocolate chip cookies, which took second place in one of the most crowded divisions at the fair.

The bustle in Building 221 began before sunrise.
Soon after, bakers from across Virginia came bearing cookies, pies, fudge, truffles, corn bread and biscuits. At the door of a football-sized tent, volunteers, mostly women and some who have been working the State Fair of Virginia for decades, carefully checked in each plate of baked goods.
