Slow heal for kin of Chesapeake detective killed in raid

CHESAPEAKE Jim Shivers was about to bury his son when a woman he didn't know walked up. She told him Jarrod Shivers had saved her life when he arrested her for driving drunk. "All she said was he was so nice to her and so kind and helpful," Jim Shivers said. "She credited him with giving up the booze and getting her life together."

Appeal denied in Chesapeake officer's death

CHESAPEAKE The state's highest court has denied Ryan Frederick's appeal of his conviction for voluntary manslaughter in the shooting death of a city detective. Eric Korslund, Frederick's lawyer, said he learned Friday that the Virginia Supreme Court rejected without comment his request that it hear his full argument. The decision was dated Tuesday.

Frederick wants informant tried for robbery

CHESAPEAKE Ryan Frederick has asked the commonwealth's attorney to prosecute a Chesapeake police informant who burglarized his Portlock home. "He should be held accountable like everybody else who breaks into people's houses," Frederick said.

CHESAPEAKE Steven Wright, a police informant, said there were "implied promises" made by police and prosecutors to take care of him in return for his testimony against Ryan Frederick, a Chesapeake man convicted of killing a police detective during a drug raid.

CHESAPEAKE The Tidewater Libertarian Party called the shooting death of a Chesapeake detective last January "tragic and avoidable" and on Tuesday night asked the City Council to create a citizen review board to investigate police policies.
