NORFOLK Gov. Timothy M. Kaine visited the smoke-free Panera Bread cafe in Ghent Thursday morning to kick off a 54-day countdown to the start of Virginia's ban on smoking in restaurants.
NORFOLK Restaurants and bars have a choice under Virginia's new smoking law: Go smoke-free by Dec. 1 or set up a room for smokers that is walled off and separately ventilated. For Dave Willis, it's no choice. His 1,200-square-foot Norfolk bar, the Haven Inn, is too small to subdivide, he said. Willis estimated that 90 percent of his customers smoke, but that'll change come December.
BY BOB LEWIS RICHMOND Democratic Gov. Timothy M. Kaine said amendments that substantially dilute a compromise bill to sharply curb smoking in Virginia restaurants breached a deal he made with House Republican leaders.
