The Virginia Department of Transportation will conduct another test lift of the High Rise Bridge tonight.

A test this morning allowed crews to inspect the electrical systems and make additional repairs after outages caused by last week’s nor’easter, a VDOT news release says.

FAA computer problem causes widespread delays

By Harry R. Weber ATLANTA There are widespread flight cancellations and delays nationwide today because of a problem with the FAA system that collects airlines' flight plans.

FAA spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen said she doesn't know how many flights are being affected or when the problem will be resolved.

Suffolk to close part of street for sewer work

Utilities crews are planning to close part of Highland Avenue for four weeks for sewer work.

The road will close Nov. 30 from Kingsboro Street to Lakeside Street, a city news release says.

Suffolk brainstorms ways to fund its road work by local means

SUFFOLK The City Council on Wednesday discussed new, local ways to pay for road projects as state funding becomes increasingly scarce. One possibility is to build a reserve fund with the extra tax revenue the city reaps each year from new construction, said Anne Seward, the city's budget director.

CHESAPEAKE If a computer were to rank local highway priorities, it would make its top picks widening many sections of Interstate 64, rebuilding Interstate 264 interchanges in Virginia Beach and widening Holland Road in Suffolk. A computer would also choose expanding the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel and the Midtown Tunnel as No. 1 and No. 2 for bridge and tunnel projects.

Va. road budget slashed $851.5M more

RICHMOND State transportation officials delivered another round of bad but not unexpected news on Wednesday when they laid out plans to further slash $851.5 million from road-building operations over the next six years. Since spring 2008, the state's six-year road plan has been reduced by $4.6 billion.

VDOT plans test lift of I-64 High-Rise Bridge on Thursday

The Virginia Department of Transportation plans to test the High-Rise Bridge on Thursday morning.

The test is set for 10 a.m. so crews can inspect electrical repairs done after a power outage caused by last week’s nor’easter, a VDOT news release said.

The test was scheduled for a time that would avoid rush hours, according to the release.

N.C. governor to assess Dare County storm damage

RODANTHE, N.C. North Carolina’s governor on Monday made an emergency declaration for Dare County, the first step in seeking federal funds to make repairs to N.C. 12. The only highway on the island was closed late Thursday after nearly 800 feet of pavement on the highway washed out during the nor’easter.

Tractor-trailer driver charged after crash closed I-64 exit in Chesapeake

CHESAPEAKE

The driver of a tractor trailer that overturned at the Greenbrier Parkway exit off Interstate 64 was charged with failure to maintain a lane.

Shortly before 3 p.m., Aaron Redd, 29, of Winston-Salem, N.C., was exiting I-64 east when the weight of his truck tipped it over, said Trooper D.H. McCarson. A preliminary investigation indicates Redd was driving too fast on the ramp.
