They’re still fast friends, but it hasn’t been easy

HOMESTEAD, Fla.
If Jimmie Johnson wins his fourth consecutive Sprint Cup title Sunday, Jeff Gordon is likely to smile, hug his teammate and celebrate the momentous feat.
As part owner of Johnson’s car, he’ll be happy.
As a competitor, pangs of frustration will gnaw at him over another championship lost.

Johnson takes the flag, holds triple-digit lead heading into Chase finale

AVONDALE, AZ
History isn't always dramatic. Even when it's remarkable.
Jimmie Johnson's run to a record-breaking fourth consecutive NASCAR Sprint Cup championship might not be appreciated by all who tire of seeing him in Victory Lane - as he was again Sunday at Phoenix International Raceway.
Get used to it.

Burton finishes 2nd, his fifth in a row in top 15

AVONDALE, AZ
Jeff Burton is showing signs that the struggles for his team this season are ending.
Burton finished second Sunday at Phoenix International Raceway. It's his third consecutive top-10 finish and the fifth race in a row he's placed in the top 15. He's not had a better streak all season.

On hobbled leg, NSU's Brown throws for career high

DOVER, Del. | For a quarterback playing basically on one leg, Norfolk State's Dennis Brown had quite an afternoon Saturday.
Brown threw for a career-high 274 yards despite sustaining a right leg injury early in NSU's 21-16 win over Delaware State.
All but 60 of those yards came in the fourth quarter, when Brown led the Spartans back from a 16-point deficit.

Stewart: 'We still have work to do'

AVONDALE, Ariz.
Tony Stewart won't win the Sprint Cup championship. Then again, few thought he would at the beginning of the season as he moved to a new team but showed its strength by leading the points a time until the title Chase began.
As the year comes to a close, Stewart reflected on what he and teammate Ryan Newman have done for Stewart-Haas Racing this year.

Rejuvenated by one of the best rides in his career, Mark Martin has shed a dreary attitude for an upbeat version that has him often smiling and enjoying his racing renaissance.

Start-and-park habit irks Blaney, but it pays the bills

AVONDALE, Ariz.
Dave Blaney fiddles with four quarters and stands among the row of cars that don't have a garage stall at Phoenix International Raceway.
This is NASCAR's low-rent district.
Here are Sprint Cup teams that show up at only some races or those that start and park, collecting a paycheck and moving on to the next track often to do the same thing.
