After sinking a 5-foot par putt that wrapped up Eastern Region tournament medalist honors Tuesday, Moss Clark made his way up a small hill from the 18th green at Sleepy Hole.
Everyone wanted to make contact with the Cox senior - teammates, opponents, spectators. A hug. A handshake. A slap on the back.

Kellam's Trey Smith worked all summer to become a better golfer. It wasn't long before Smith - and the rest of the state - saw just how much he had improved. Smith's 2-foot par putt in a one-hole playoff last month earned him medalist honors in the Virginia High School Invitational in Midlothian.

VIRGINIA BEACH Virginia Beach's Greg Thomas won twice in match play Wednesday to reach today's quarterfinals of the Virginia State Golf Association Senior Amateur at Princess Anne Country Club. Thomas, who plays Suffolk's Bobby Bleiler, eliminated O.D. Gardner of Newport News 4 and 3 and Bill Cowardin of Newport News 2 and 1. Virginia Beach's George B. Owens also reached the quarterfinals.

ST.LOUIS Norfolk's Kristen Simpson shot a 3-over-par 74 in the first round and trails leader Amy Anderson of North Dakota by six strokes in the U.S. Women's Amateur Championship at the Old Warson Country Club. Kimberly Kim from Hilo, Hawaii, and Ha Na Jang of Korea share second place at 69.

HOT SPRINGS Peggy Woodard of Virginia Beach and Cindy Morris of Portsmouth will meet in a match-play quarterfinal today at the 52nd Virginia State Golf Association Senior Women's Amateur Championship at The Homestead's Old Course. Woodard needed 19 holes to defeat Arline Hoffman of Alexandria on Wednesday. Morris advanced with a 2-and-1 victory over top seed Lindsay Wortham of Richmond.

Richmond golfer leads junior amateur tournament

PETERSBURG Richmond's Adam Ball shot a 5-under-par 67 on Monday to take a one-shot lead after the first round of the VSGA Junior Amateur Championship at the Country Club of Petersburg. Ball, 15, is a stroke ahead of Midlothian's Nick Austin and Centreville's Ji Soo Park, who each posted a 4-under 68.
