Groups to sponsor hound adoptions in Chesapeake

CHESAPEAKE

The Suffolk Humane Society and Suffolk Animal Control will sponsor an "Ain't Nothing Like a Hound Dog" adopt-a-thon Sunday at the Chesapeake Square PetSmart, 4300 Portsmouth Blvd. in Western Branch.

Adoption hours are from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The two groups are also sponsoring an adoption drive on Saturday featuring cats, kittens, other dog breeds and puppies.

High-Rise Bridge closure scheduled for Sunday

CHESAPEAKE The High-Rise Bridge on Interstate 64 will be closed for three hours Sunday morning for scheduled maintenance. The closure is scheduled to begin at 7 a.m., according to the Virginia Department of Transportation. Drivers can use the Downtown Tunnel as an alternate route.

Boater rescued from Elizabeth River in Chesapeake

CHESAPEAKE A man in a 28-foot sailboat that started to sink was rescued from the Elizabeth River near the Steel Bridge on Dominion Boulevard this afternoon. A Coast Guard crew aboard a helicopter that happened to be flying over the area saw the sailboat and lowered a rescue swimmer to aid him. Also, Virginia Marine Police as well as a private tugboat, Maverick, responded to aid the boater.

Alejandro Ruiz, 19, was indicted on a charges of attempted second-degree murder, abduction with intent to defile and three counts of malicious wounding.
