Bayport Credit Union in Newport News robbed; one arrested

NEWPORT NEWS Two men wearing masks robbed the BayPort Credit Union at 80th Street and Marshall Avenue on Friday morning, police said. Police later arrested one suspect.

One man had a gun. They approached a teller and demanded money, then ran east on 81st Street.

NEWPORT NEWS A man being sought by police after being released from jail by mistake is back in custody this morning, according to police.

Christopher Devon Barrett, 23, turned himself in to authorities at the Newport News City Jail about 6:30 a.m. today, according to Newport News police.

NEWPORT NEWS A Newport News man, 20, was shot in the chest about 3:20 p.m. Thursday in the 2200 block of Chestnut Ave., police said. The shooting happened in front of Newport News Market. The man was taken to a hospital for treatment. His name and condition were not available.

A Newport News man was charged Thursday in a shooting death in 2008, police said.

Jarice Lamier Royal, 21, was charged with murder, attempted robbery, possession of a firearm by a felon and two counts of using a firearm in the commission of a felony in the death of William Morrison, police said.

Police are asking for the public’s help locating a 23-year-old man who was released from jail by mistake.

Christopher Devon Barrett was being held on a charge of possession of a firearm as a convicted felon, according to a statement from police.

H1N1 vaccination clinic in Newport News this weekend

Peninsula Health District officials plan an H1N1 vaccination clinic for adults Saturday.

It will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Brittingham-Midtown Community Center, 570 McLawhorne Drive. The clinic is for adults only, a news release says; children will not be vaccinated.

A fire this morning caused an estimated $50,000 in damage to a vacant home in the 100 block of Post St., fire officials said. No injuries were reported.

Fire on porch of Newport News house causes $10,000 in damage

NEWPORT NEWS A porch fire caused $10,000 in damage to a house in the 900 block of 17th St. on Monday night, the Fire Department said today.

The fire was reported by a neighbor at 10:47 p.m. and was contained to the front porch of the two-story house. It was under control by 11:05 p.m., the department said.
