Eustis soldiers due home from Afghanistan

After serving for a year in Afghanistan, about 200 soldiers from Fort Eustis are set to return Saturday.

The troops were assigned to the headquarters of the 7th Sustainment Brigade’s Special Troops Battalion and the brigade headquarters' command element, and were based out of Kandahar airfield in southern Afghanistan.

4-year-old girl left on Newport News school bus

NEWPORT NEWS Newport News school officials plan to investigate an incident in which a 4-year-old girl was left on a bus for about two hours.

Schools spokeswoman Michelle Price tells The Daily Press that the driver and a bus assistant have been suspended pending the investigation of the Feb. 3 incident.

NEWPORT NEWS Former Virginia Tech quarterback Maurice DeShazo is among hundreds of men arrested in a nationwide sting on prostitution and other sex crime charges.

DeShazo is charged with soliciting prostitution. Media outlets report DeShazo was arrested along with 14 other men in Newport News.

NEWPORT NEWS Newport News-Williamsburg International Airport has joined more than 130 airports nationwide that have full body-scanning technology.

The Transportation Security Administration installed the new security equipment at the airport about two weeks ago.

A 49-year-old man has been charged with sexually assaulting a child.

Police began investigating in December, after Child Protective Services called them, police wrote in a news release. The incidents reported happened between January 2008 and March 2009.

Police are looking for a suspect wanted in connection with a robbery that occurred about two weeks ago.

A 22-year-old Newport News man told police he was driving his car on Jefferson Avenue when another car passed him and stopped suddenly in front of his car, according to a news release.
