SUFFOLK The city has begun seizing rent payments and is exploring other means to recoup nearly $350,000 in delinquent taxes owed by two real estate developers charged in a federal tax-fraud case.

A colonel in the Army Reserve assigned to a Suffolk unit has sued the federal government in hopes of overturning the military's ban on women in combat.
Attorneys for Col. Ellen Haring and Command Sgt. Maj. Jane Baldwin filed a lawsuit challenging the legality of Pentagon and Army policies that exclude women from certain ground combat units because of their sex.

Two Suffolk brothers charged in illegal DVD sales

SUFFOLK Two brothers from Suffolk have been arrested and charged in connection with the sale of illegal DVDs. Police received warrants and today searched a home in the 600 block of Chisholm Lane, according to a city news release. Officers found more than 5,000 illegal DVDs, along with $1,300, computer systems set up to make the DVDs and illegal perfumes.

Man recovering after being shot in Suffolk

SUFFOLK A 20-year-old is recovering after being shot Wednesday night in the 100 block of S. 6th St. Police who were called about 8:30 a.m. on a report of shots fired found the man who had been shot in the area of his left hip, according to Debbie George, city spokeswoman. The man was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

Suffolk man wins $250,000 from lottery scratch ticket

SUFFOLK A Suffolk man won $250,000 from a Virginia Lottery scratch ticket that he received for his 20th birthday. Shawn Hoadley won the top prize in the Red Hot 5s Doubler game and couldn’t speak after he scratched the ticket, according to a release on the Virginia Lottery’s website. The winning ticket was purchased at the Kangaroo Express, 819 W. Washington St.
