Water main repair shuts off service in Suffolk

SUFFOLK Some homes and businesses in the 100 block of West Washington St. will be without water while a water main break is repaired. The service will be shut off between North Main and Saratoga streets until about 3:30 p.m., a city news release says. About 30 customers will be affected. For more information, call 757-514-7000.

Man injured in crash on U.S. 58 in Suffolk

SUFFOLK A man was cut free from a car after he crashed into a tree this morning on U.S. 58 near the weigh station. The crash happened about 7:15 in the eastbound lanes after the man left the road and slammed into the tree, a city news release says.

SUFFOLK School Board members on Thursday asked the superintendent to adjust his proposed budget to include at least a2 percent pay increase for employees. "We have cut and we have cut and we simply cannot cut any more," board member Diane Foster said. "It's time to take a really hard stand."

SUFFOLK A fire confined to the bathroom of a home in the 100 block of Katherine Street displaced two adults and a child this afternoon. No one was injured. Firefighters responded to the home at 3:25 p.m. and quickly brought the fire under control, according to a city news release. The fire was ruled an accident, and damage was estimated to be $5,000.

4 people displaced by house fire in Suffolk

SUFFOLK Three adults and a child were displaced by a house fire in the 2800 block of S. Nansemond Drive Wednesday night. The fire was reported shortly after 11 p.m. and firefighters had the blaze under control in about 20 minutes, a city news release says. No injuries were reported. The attic of the home had moderate damage. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Last summer, when a School Board member shared concerns about teen boys wearing long wigs, dresses and makeup to class, the principals of the three city high schools insisted they hadn't seen it.
Superintendent Deran Whitney said he had heard no complaints and had observed only one boy - in jeans and a shirt - dressed in "what is traditionally viewed as female clothing."
