RALEIGH, N.C. A North Carolina doctor could lose his medical license after a patient complained he made cutting criticisms, including telling her she was fat.

The News & Observer of Raleigh reported the North Carolina Medical Board will decide if Dr. Earl Sunderhaus of Asheville overstepped the bounds of professional decency.

October could signal direction for N.C. jobless rate

RALEIGH, N.C. North Carolina's unemployment figures for October could show whether a predicted late-year jobs crunch is hitting the state economy.

The state's Employment Security Commission today will release the latest data, which will show whether the jobless rate that has hovered around 11 percent for eight months has gotten better or worse.

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. Officials in Currituck County have declared a state of emergency after a nor'easter eroded oceanfront dunes and flooded several homes and cropland. Currituck County Board of Commissioners Chairman Owen Etheridge made the formal declaration Wednesday.

Navy doing bird study at proposed OLF site

RALEIGH, NC The Navy is conducting another bird study at a proposed North Carolina site for an outlying landing field for jet fighters. Surveys will be conducted through February to track migratory patterns at Hale Lake in Camden County. The Navy wants to build a landing field where F/A-18 Super Hornet pilots can practice carrier takeoffs and landings before deployments.

Boat hits N.C. bridge, 1 person injured

ATLANTIC BEACH, N.C. At least one person was injured after a boat hit a high-rise bridge on the North Carolina coast.

The Daily News of Jacksonville reported the boat with three people on board hit a piling on the bridge between Atlantic Beach and Morehead City about 5 p.m. Tuesday.
