Already struggling, E. Shore schools see deep cuts

The Eastern Shore counties of Accomack and Northampton face losing about $1,000 per student, about double the cut facing Virginia Beach schools just across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel.

Student spacecraft to launch from Va. NASA facility

ATLANTIC Two spacecraft designed and built by university students in Kentucky and California will launch into space next week at NASA's Wallops Island facility on Virginia's Eastern Shore.

The spacecraft are no bigger than child's toy block but will gather information that may be applied to future small Earth-orbiting space vehicles.

Wallops Flight Facility winning more NASA support

ATLANTIC, Va. NASA is increasing its support of the Wallops Flight Facility on Virginia's Eastern Shore.

The space agency said the support contract with the Virginia Space Flight Authority has a potential value of approximately $43 million through May 2014.

Man, 38, dies in Gloucester County crash

A 38-year-old man died in a two-vehicle crash on Route 14 this morning.

About 10 a.m. Virginia State Police were called to Route 14, west of Route 623, a news release said.

A cougar on the Eastern Shore? At least 3 people say yes.

At least three people say they've spotted a mountain lion on the southern end of the Eastern Shore.
And no, they weren't drunk.
Which leads to the next question: How could a mountain lion - a species long considered extinct in Virginia - wind up in a place as hard to reach as the Eastern Shore?

Fish plant works to clean up its act, eliminate smell with $20M

REEDVILLE Virginia has never been known to beat up companies that violate environmental laws, but in the case of Omega Protein Corp., in 2007, the state had just about seen enough. Inspectors had determined that Omega Protein again was allowing toxic ammonia to escape its menhaden-processing plant, the largest of its kind on the East Coast, into a creek within earshot of the Chesapeake Bay.

Some schools closed again; others opening late

Accomack County Public Schools are closed again today while schools in Gloucester and Mathews will open two hours late.

Officials in Dare County, N.C., reported that schools there will be closed today. Schools in Lancaster County also will be closed, WVEC-TV was reporting.

Several school districts are opening late today or have decided to remain closed because of hazardous road conditions caused by last weekend’s storm.

Schools in Accomack and Lancaster counties will be closed today, WVEC-TV was reporting this morning. Schools in Northampton County will open one hour late today.

Tangier mystery: Who left a box of bones by a trash bin?

Someone left skeletal remains in cardboard box by a trash bin last week on Tangier Island, in the middle of the Chesapeake Bay.

That kind of thing doesn’t happen much on the tiny island, so it seems it wouldn’t be hard to figure out who did it. But so far, no one has come forward.

The bones were discovered Jan. 27 near the wastewater treatment plant.
