"Iris had a real loud laugh," said her friend Cindy Smith, "and she wasn't afraid to use it. It was rare to see her without a smile, and this was true even as her life was drawing to a close."

Classical music listeners who've tuned in to WHRO-FM weekdays between 3 and 7 p.m. for the "Afternoon Delights" show are missing the subtle wit and cordial voice of announcer Taylor Green, who died Saturday at age 60, but perhaps his real genius was in the way he programmed the music selection himself.

Herb Poindexter Jr., owner of Herb’s Great American Hot Dogs in Great Bridge, died Sunday at Chesapeake Regional Medical Center. He was 72. Poindexter was remembered Sunday for his generosity, good nature and public service.

By Fred Kirsch Frieda died first, as she had wanted. The thought of going on without Jules at her side, as she said many times, was unthinkable. Jules died two days later, on Oct. 5. Frieda was 96 and Jules 95. Distantly related, they met briefly as young people when Jules visited her home in Berlin. They would meet again, years later, in America.
