A high content of nitrates - often originating from animal waste - was responsible for the water's color, said Sarah's instructor, Jennifer Kodolitsch.

The late Ada Rubin Michaels had a passion for education so strong that not even death could stop it.
Although the longtime educator and civic activist died of cancer in 2002, her memory lives on, especially at Tidewater Community College.

By Lia Russell, Rita Frakenberry, Phyllis Speidell and Devon Sorlie

Thinner paychecks and mounting prices have holiday gift givers making lists and checking them twice. And this year, remembering friends and family without breaking the budget or feeling like Scrooge is a challenge facing a lot of people.

By Bill Leffler

You would have to say Jim Groves is quite a golfer for a guy who never played the game until he was 26 years old.
The 65-year-old Virginia Beach body shop owner walked away with the 2008 Bide-A-Wee Seniors Championship held Nov. 8-9. Groves had rounds of 70 and 75 for a 1-over-par 145 and a 3-shot victory over Jack Barrett and Bobby Jeffries.

When Michael Cheeks was playing the trumpet in Cradock High's marching band during the late 1970s, he never imagined his talent would one day save someone's life.
Cheeks, 47, a retired Marine master sergeant now living in New Orleans, had not played trumpet for years but had taken a few refresher lessons in May.

After her sentencing, she attempted to register to vote, but her registration wasn't accepted because she was a felon.

By Ida Kay Jordan
Portsmouth
Herman Ellis is 93. Phillip Killebrew Jr. is 18. They represent the oldest and youngest of some 355 election officers who will be working at the polls on Election Day.
All across town Tuesday they will be up and out long before most of us. They're citizens who work for the Registrar's Office and they have to be in their polling places by 5 a.m.
