The late Ada Rubin Michaels had a passion for education so strong that not even death could stop it. Although the longtime educator and civic activist died of cancer in 2002, her memory lives on, especially at Tidewater Community College.

The 65-year-old Virginia Beach body shop owner walked away with the 2008 Bide-A-Wee Seniors Championship held Nov. 8-9. Groves had rounds of 70 and 75 for a 1-over-par 145 and a 3-shot victory over Jack Barrett and Bobby Jeffries.

Trumpeter's tribute to vets saves a life

When Michael Cheeks was playing the trumpet in Cradock High's marching band during the late 1970s, he never imagined his talent would one day save someone's life. Cheeks, 47, a retired Marine master sergeant now living in New Orleans, had not played trumpet for years but had taken a few refresher lessons in May.

Remember the Grand Illumination Parade next Saturday, Nov. 22, is a joint Portsmouth-Norfolk enterprise to kick off the Holidays in the City on both sides of the Elizabeth River. The lights will be turned on in both cities and the parade on Norfolk's Waterside Drive will begin at 7 p.m.

VIRGINIA BEACH Eighteen years ago, a youthful lapse of judgment tagged Lecia Woodhouse with a felony conviction for credit card fraud, forgery and theft. She was sentenced to supervised release. After her sentencing, she attempted to register to vote, but her registration wasn't accepted because she was a felon.

By Ida Kay Jordan Portsmouth Herman Ellis is 93. Phillip Killebrew Jr. is 18. They represent the oldest and youngest of some 355 election officers who will be working at the polls on Election Day. All across town Tuesday they will be up and out long before most of us. They're citizens who work for the Registrar's Office and they have to be in their polling places by 5 a.m.
