In a stunning finish that left Lake Taylor shrieking with delight and Hampton howling in complaint, the Titans notched a 10-7 overtime victory in the Eastern Region Division 5 semifinals Friday night when LaRoderick Dean blocked a 23-yard field goal attempt that could have sent the game into a second overtime.

Pitch left, toss right and quarterback sneaks up the middle.
Phoebus employed a blue-collar blueprint in dominating Great Bridge in an Eastern Region Division 5 semifinal at Darling Stadium.
Colby Goodwyn rushed for 103 yards and three touchdowns in the Phantoms’ 42-0 thrashing Friday night.

They’re still fast friends, but it hasn’t been easy

HOMESTEAD, Fla.
If Jimmie Johnson wins his fourth consecutive Sprint Cup title Sunday, Jeff Gordon is likely to smile, hug his teammate and celebrate the momentous feat.
As part owner of Johnson’s car, he’ll be happy.
As a competitor, pangs of frustration will gnaw at him over another championship lost.

Oscar Smith turns tie into win with last-minute TD

CHESAPEAKE
A tie game, ball at midfield. Thirty-four seconds.
Who would you want guiding your team?
Oscar Smith star quarterback Phillip Sims, the state’s career leader in a host of categories, needed just two plays – and the fleet feet of receivers Charlie Ricks and Quinta Funderburk – to keep the Tigers’ season alive.

Skins' punter drawing praise for arm rather than leg

By Joseph White
ASHBURN
The Redskins' Hunter Smith is getting a lot of attention for a punter.
In Washington's season opener he scored a touchdown, running 8 yards on a fake field goal.
Then he got hurt. Twice. The pulled groin in his kicking leg forced the Redskins to use three other punters over a five-game span. Smith nearly went on the season-ending injured reserve list.

Reeling Cavaliers reduced to just playing 'for pride'

By Doug Doughty
From the moment that Boston College snuffed out Virginia's bid for an upset last Saturday and assured the Cavaliers of a losing record, U.Va. players have been saying that they will be playing "for pride" in their final two football games.
They didn't get that from head coach Al Groh.

Monarchs are facing big challenge at VMI

Old Dominion's Monarchs didn't really practice this week as much as they tried to actually prepare for their season finale today at Virginia Military Institute.
Since VMI runs the triple-option, an offense ODU has yet to play against, the Monarchs scrapped their conventional practice approach.

Monarch men on fire from behind the arc

His name might has well have been Trey-an, so clear were the expectations for Old Dominion guard Trian Iliadis.
He was recruited to shoot, to provide the feathery-touched perimeter complement to the Monarchs' heavy lifting around the hoop. On a big, physical team with high aspirations it is an important role, and it is considered one of the keys to ODU's success this season.
