VIRGINIA BEACH A memorial service is being held today at the Convention Center for Bishop Barnett K. Thoroughgood, who collapsed and died after preaching a sermon at New Jerusalem Church of God in Christ. He was 62. The sermon urged the congregation to seek God because “tomorrow is not promised to you.”

Boy critical, father charged in Va. Beach shooting

VIRGINIA BEACH A 4-year-old boy is in critical condition this morning after being shot, and his father has been charged in the case. Nicholas A. Pierce, 26, was charged with felony child neglect after the boy was shot in the hip Thursday afternoon, police wrote in a news release this morning. He is being held without bond in jail.

The acknowledgment from Bob Morin comes days after the boy's biological mother said publicly that she alerted social workers to possible abuse days before his death two years ago.

VIRGINIA BEACH Police say a 4-year-old boy was shot in the hip in the 3800 block of Buckhorn Place on Thursday. One of the child's parents called police at 4:17 p.m. to report an accidental shooting, police spokeswoman Grazia Moyers said. The circumstances surrounding the shooting have not been confirmed by police.

Search warrant: Son shot father in Kempsville home

VIRGINIA BEACH A man called 911 last week after his brother told him he had just shot their father, according to a search warrant affidavit filed in the incident that left father and son dead and police massed outside a Kempsville home most of an afternoon. There had been signs of trouble the day before, explained the document, filed this week in Circuit Court.
