Federal stimulus funds allocated to phantom congressional districts

Anyone checking the federal government Web site that tracks stimulus money will find that Virginia's 12th Congressional District got more than $2 million.
One tiny problem: Virginia only has 11 districts.
Where is the 12th, and maybe more important, where is the money?

Del. Phil Hamilton quits House amid ethics inquiries

RICHMOND
Rejected by voters in his bid for another term and under scrutiny from a state ethics panel, Del. Phil Hamilton has decided to quit the Virginia House of Delegates.
His resignation, effective Sunday, ends a long and productive legislative career on an ignominious note but appears to have at least one benefit for him: It may also end the state ethics investigation.

Concerned that Republican gubernatorial candidate Bob McDonnell’s rising tide might float additional House GOP hopefuls to Election Day wins, Democrats at the last minute are pumping thousands of dollars into a host of district races in South Hampton Roads and beyond to protect vulnerable seats.

NORFOLK
Creigh Deeds is hoping the kind of energy President Barack Obama generated among a crowd of 5,700 on Tuesday is contagious enough to overcome polls suggesting he trails Republican Bob McDonnell and needs long presidential coattails to drag him to victory Nov. 3.

McDonnell greets voters, rolls cones at Doumar's

NORFOLK
Republican gubernatorial candidate Bob McDonnell brought his campaign to Hampton Roads on Saturday, shaking hands and making hand-rolled waffle cones at Doumar’s Cones & Barbecue in Norfolk.

“That’s a great American story,” McDonnell said after talking with Al Doumar, the owner, and his son Thad Doumar. “What a great piece of history.”

Tighten gun rules, most Virginians say in poll

Most Virginians say they want to close the so-called gun show loophole that permits some gun sales without criminal background checks, and they dislike the notion of someone carrying a concealed firearm into a restaurant that serves alcohol, according to a new poll.

Poll: Fix roads, but don't raise taxes

Most Virginians are adamant about not wanting to raise taxes to address transportation problems, but depending on where they live, they disagree about whether fixing urban congestion is a regional or a state responsibility, according to a new poll.
Almost one of every four likely voters indicated that if the state needs to make more budget cuts, they want to start with transportation spending.
