On a near party- line vote, Virginia's state Senate passed a measure Monday that would protect gay and lesbian state workers from discrimination.

Welcome to the subcommittee where tax-increase bills go to die.

With eye on U.S. Rep. Nye, GOP hopefuls debate

NASSAWADOX
The first public debate Thursday night of the six Republicans seeking the GOP nomination to run for Congress against Glenn Nye was less about their differences than their shared views that the federal government has to shrink and the U.S. has to become energy independent.
Their messages varied, but all carried the same theme - less government interference.

Gov. Bob McDonnell has been picked to deliver the Republican response to President Barack Obama's upcoming State of the Union address, a strong indication he is an ascendant figure in the national GOP.
