Despite a hurricane in the Southeast and a snowstorm in the Northeast, consumers continued to shop at Dollar Tree Inc.'s stores, helping to boost its profit by 12 percent in the third quarter.
Earnings for the quarter, ended Oct. 29, rose to $104.5 million, or 87 cents per share, from $93.2 million, or 73 cents per share, for the same period in 2010.

Dollar Tree recalls glass votive candleholders

Dollar Tree Inc. has recalled about 117,000 glass votive candleholders because they can shatter while in use, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.

The candleholders are frosted or clear glass, 2.5 inches tall, with French vanilla-scented candles inside. They are model 976127, with date code 1010 printed on the bottom.

Dollar Tree founder, wife donate $10M to college

Macon F. Brock Jr., Dollar Tree Inc.'s chairman and co-founder, and his wife, Joan, have donated $10 million to Randolph-Macon College in Ashland for its capital campaign, the college announced Friday.
Brock, who graduated from the college in 1964, chairs the campaign and has served on its board of trustees for 18 years.

Dollar Tree Inc.'s momentum continued in the third quarter, with earnings leaping 36.7 percent as customers scooped up groceries and Halloween goods.

The Chesapeake-based retailer's income reached $93.2 million in the quarter ended Oct. 30, or 73 cents per share, up from $68.2 million, or 51 cents a share, in the same period last year.

CHESAPEAKE Discount retailer Dollar Tree said it has completed the purchase of Canada's Dollar Giant stores for about $52 million in cash. The Chesapeake-based company said Wednesday that the deal includes 86 Dollar Giant Stores, including substantially all assets, inventory, leasehold rights and intellectual property. It is Dollar Tree's first expansion outside the United States.
