The Port of Hampton Roads was reopened by the U.S. Coast Guard captain of the port Saturday evening, according to a news release issued at 1:40 a.m. Sunday.

Dominion continues restoring power to Hampton Roads and N.C.

There were still 1,430 customers without power in southeastern Virginia and North Carolina, according to an 11 p.m. report posted on the Dominion Virginia Power and Dominion North Carolina Power Web site. However, there were still about 6,600 customers without power throughout the two states. In all, nearly 200,000 Dominion customers lost power as a result of Hanna.

Tropical Storm Hanna paid a quick visit to the Outer Banks and checked out before noon Saturday, leaving a stiff breeze and rough surf behind. With the storm’s center carving through inland counties, the worst weather delivered to the coast was a blast of heavy rain during the morning. It cleared out within about 30 minutes.

Wind gusts and heavy rain from Tropical Storm Hanna caused a series of minor traffic problems across the region this morning, although the brunt of the storm appeared to be causing bigger headaches in central Virginia.

Kitesurfer safe in N.C. after being separated from friend

A kitesurfer who was separated from a friend Friday off the coast of North Carolina safety made it back to shore, the Coast Guard said Friday night.

The Coast Guard identified him as Frank Mueller, 31, who had gone kite surfing with a friend at Harkers Island, N.C.

The friend reported him missing about 5:30 p.m. after they became separated and Mueller did not return, the Coast Guard said.

Beach Shriners parade another victim of approaching storm

VIRGINIA BEACH The prospect of tropical-storm -force winds, a nemesis of even the hardiest fez hat, means the Shriners parade has been canceled today. For Shriners, the parade down Atlantic Avenue is the pinnacle of a three-day convention that's been held each of the past 12 years at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront.
