Groups to sponsor hound adoptions in Chesapeake

CHESAPEAKE

The Suffolk Humane Society and Suffolk Animal Control will sponsor an "Ain't Nothing Like a Hound Dog" adopt-a-thon Sunday at the Chesapeake Square PetSmart, 4300 Portsmouth Blvd. in Western Branch.

Adoption hours are from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The two groups are also sponsoring an adoption drive on Saturday featuring cats, kittens, other dog breeds and puppies.

Officials seek cat that bit person in Williamsburg

WILLIAMSBURG Health officials are asking for the public’s help locating a cat that bit a person in Ford’s Colony on Tuesday. The cat is large, black and white with a white stripe down its nose, according to a news release from the Peninsula Health District. The cat looks healthy. If it isn’t found, the person who was bitten will have to undergo shots to prevent rabies.

Fancy that! Show with eight hurricane-surviving kitties

Among the hundreds of pretty kitties coming to Newport News this weekend will be eight with some pretty harrowing stories, and maybe only eight of their nine lives left.
Martin, Gypsy, Gadget, Sylvester, Miss Hatteras, Bootsie, Betsy and Riley were all rescued on Hatteras Island after Hurricane Irene, and they are looking for new homes.

Suffolk teen who killed kitten gets probation

SUFFOLK
A 13-year-old boy convicted of beating a kitten to death last spring was sentenced this week to supervised probation and given a suspended sentence of 30 days in juvenile detention.
The boy, who was 12 at the time of the incident, was convicted Oct. 18 in Suffolk Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court of misdemeanor animal cruelty.

Andrew Hall, 17, pets Gracie, a three-legged dog that originally lived in Afghanistan, in his Virginia Beach home on Friday. Members of PETA took care of the dog in October after it was brought back to the States by a soldier serving in Afghanistan. PETA delivered the dog to its new adoptive owners on Friday.

She's missing half a leg and both ears - apparently the result of scrapping to survive on the streets of Afghanistan, where she won the heart of an American soldier.

46 animals adopted from new Virginia Beach center

VIRGINIA BEACH Nearly 50 homeless animals found families Saturday and Sunday during the inaugural weekend of the city's new Animal Care and Adoption Center. Residents were lined up to find new pets when the shelter opened at 10 a.m. Saturday, shelter spokesman Wayne Gilbert said. Forty-six animals - 26 dogs, 14 cats, four ferrets and two snakes - went to new homes, he said.
