It's that cookie time of the year

By Melinda Forbes
It's December and cooks' heads are filled with visions of chocolate chips, brown sugar, oatmeal, raisins, spices and sprinkles. Cookies are a part of the holiday tradition. And homemade cookies? There's not a cheesecake or a chocolate mousse out there that can beat a warm, gingerbread man, sugary shortbread or peanut butter blossom just out of the oven.

Appetizers
Try Anchor Liberty Ale, above, or Victory Prima Pils with lighter fare and hors d'oeuvres. They won't overpower salads, cheeses or finger foods.

Or try Legend Lager or Brooklyn Pilsner

Virginia Beach localvores who prefer their foods home-grown won't have trouble finding staples for a creative or traditional Thanksgiving meal this year.
Local farmers have plenty of fresh foods for the salad and main courses, and naturalist Vickie Shufer of Blackwater has some ideas for desserts to make from native fruits.

Eat out tonight at your local car dealer

You're waiting for your car to be serviced at a dealership and you're getting hungry. What to do? Well, there's a vending machine down the hall. Ugh. But two Hampton Roads dealers offer another option, having opened cafes in their automotive showrooms. So is the food good enough to merit a special trip? Staff epicure Lorraine Eaton and I visited, and here's what we found:

PORTSMOUTH
It's usually floods, hurricanes or other disasters that get the wheels of Mercy Chefs rolling.

VIRGINIA BEACH
It's food fit for the gods. But it's made by humans.
Specifically, by the Ladies Philoptochos Society of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church.
The women will sell a variety of the delectables at their annual Holiday Bake Sale of Greek Pastries and Entrees, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday at the church on First Colonial Road.
