Sen. Joe Lieberman’s threat to filibuster any health care bill with a public option could kill health reform this year — and embolden Democratic challengers who’d like to send him packing in 2012.

But Lieberman doesn’t seem worried.

NORFOLK Jury selection began Tuesday in the federal trial of a Virginia Beach doctor accused of defrauding government health care programs of about $800,000. Dr. Ronald Poulin, a hematologist and oncologist, is charged with overbilling Medicare and Tricare by submitting claims for procedures and injections that did not occur.

Virginia Beach A Beach man charged with setting up a robbery that turned deadly was ordered Thursday to serve 20 years in prison and pay a $50,000 fine. Jurors convicted Keone Baxter, 30, of conspiracy and attempted robbery but acquitted him of murder and firearm charges in the Feb. 7, 2008, death of Sherrod Bailey.

Virginia Beach A Virginia Beach man was ordered this week to serve 24 years in prison for fatally shooting a friend in 2008. James Austin Devoe Jr., 34, was given a sentence Monday of 53 years in prison; Circuit Judge Edward W. Hanson Jr. suspended 29 years.

NORFOLK A federal court jury Monday convicted a Jamaican woman for her role in an international immigration fraud ring that brought hundreds of illegal workers into the country. After an eight-day trial, the jury in U.S. District Court found Clover May Robinson-Gordon, 44, guilty of one count of conspiracy and five counts of money laundering.
