Young Suffolk angler was set for bull red's challenge

Justin Hurst knew his son was a good angler.
But he didn't think he was prepared to battle a bull.
"He wanted to go last year, but I just didn't think he was quite ready," Hurst said.
This year, though, Hurst thought it was time for Logan to give it a try.
So he rigged up a rod and reel, gave it to the 9-year-old and held on to the end of the line.

Fishing Forecast: Week of May 24-30

Let's get ahead of ourselves just a tiny bit and look to one of the most anticipated arrivals in the coastal waters of North Carolina and Virginia - cobia.
This powerhouse attracts considerable angler attention when it first shows along the coast of Ocracoke Island, from where word quickly spreads that the brown battler has started its migration north.

Outdoors Report for the week of May 20

It was 11 years ago when Chris Vitovich’s close friend died from cancer.
Vitovich had vowed days earlier to hold a fishing tournament in his hunting and fishing buddy’s honor.
It was a brutal undertaking for Vitovich, who was trying to recover from back surgery.
He ran most of the first tournament laying on a cot under a tent at West Landing Marina.

Talk about a rapid rise to the top.
While there aren't any records kept for it, it's very likely that Kitt Moger currently is the fastest rising star in Virginia's freshwater fishing scene.

Fishing Forecast: Week of May 17-23

The black sea bass has become a hot-button topic of conversation the past three years because of federally-mandated closures most anglers feel are unnecessary.
Federal fisheries biologists are on record stating that the species is not overfished and that overfishing does not take place. They say the stock is pretty much where it needs to be.

Opinion mixed on penned field trials for hunting hounds

CORAPEAKE, N.C.
Held tightly in her mother's arms, 18-month-old Cali Rogers pointed as hound dog No. 47 screamed past.
Cali loves the dogs so much that "Mommy" or "Daddy" weren't her first words.
"Dawg," Cali cooed.
There was a time, not too long ago, when her mom, Christie, never would have dreamed of bringing her child to a field trial for hunting hounds.

Off the Hook | Local captain is preserving memories

When Harry Hindmarsh takes his children fishing, it takes him back.
"It always reminds me of my dad putting a rod in my hands and helping me learn how to fish," said Hindmarsh. "It was so thoughtful of my dad... getting me into it.
"He is the ultimate fisher and hunter. In his generation, they fished and hunted for food. Now, it's sport and he still loves it."
