Track: Norcom boys, Churchland girls win district

HAMPTON

Norcom boys track coach Lisa Carnes couldn’t watch. She wanted to see the 1,600-meter relay – the final event of the meet – but nerves got the best of her.

“I wasn’t feeling good,” she said. “You get nervous when it’s something you can’t control.”

Finish in '11 state finals motivated First Colonial senior

By Ray Nimmo
VIRGINIA BEACH
First Colonial's Lauren Hadley climbed out of the pool crying, her hands bleeding from smacking the diving board.
Hadley listened as her coach, Diane Smalley, told her there was no shame in exiting the competition if she couldn't continue.
But this was the Group AAA state championships last year, and Hadley pressed on.

Signing Peyton Manning would be risky for Redskins, but appealing

Before futility was set in concrete, Redskins coach Mike Shanahan tried buying time last season by explaining that his quarterback situation was "week to week."
What he meant - at least, what the rest of us couldn't help but think - was that juggling Rex Grossman and John Beck was a case of going from weak to weak.

Lady Monarchs leave Delaware with loss, gain confidence

NEWARK, Del.
After falling to the class of the CAA, the Old Dominion women's basketball team believes it can play with the best and beat all the rest.
That's the message the Lady Monarchs preached Thursday night after a 76-63 loss at No. 12 Delaware, a reasonable road effort for the Lady Monarchs given the Blue Hens' dominance this season.
