Chef whips up masterpiece every night, sans recipe

NORFOLK
There's little that's "everyday" about this month's everyday chef, 41-year-old John Cann.
Instead of a gourmet kitchen filled with cookbooks and a big-screen TV tuned to the Food Network, Cann's Norfolk residence is home to a tiny cooking space and walls covered with brightly colored original acrylic and oil paintings.
He doesn't even have a dining room table.

Strawberries mean one thing - shortcake!

By AnnaLisa Michalski
Correspondent
Strawberry picking came early this year. My three junior pickers were happy to fill two buckets with fresh, sweet berries. The troops gobbled up nearly one bucket that same afternoon, but there still wasn't room in the refrigerator for the rest.

I don't love to bake, but it sure is sweet when it's over

A parallel exists between my
work and private lives. Many people, when they find out that I write for a living, tell me it must be so much fun.
It is. It truly is. But, to be honest, the best part about writing is having written.
There is such relief after I hit "SEND" to move a story out of my waking thoughts and nighttime dreams and into my capable editor's hands.

Chef has knack for cooking, bringing people together

Will Christopher is a natural in the kitchen. He can easily converse, chop, greet guests, make introductions, light the grill, change the mood music, toss the salad with his hands and keep an eye on the sauce on the stove all at the same time without ever missing a beat.

Long, slow simmer does the trick

Springtime is perfect for cooking that is low, slow and wet. Which is to say, braised.
And it's simpler than you might think. Braising is just a matter of cooking food, usually meat, for a long period at a low temperature and submerged in some kind of liquid. Pot roasts and beef stews are good examples, as are many foods cooked in a slow cooker.

Throw a retro party, 'Mad Men' style

Does Don Draper do finger food? Judging by the first four seasons of TV's popular "Mad Men" show, it doesn't seem likely that the?suave character resorts to that.
Unless, of course, we're talking about a belt of bourbon with a couple of smoking-hot Lucky Strikes on the side.
