In 2009, Virginia Beach started installing cameras at 13 of the city’s most hazardous intersections. Last year, they captured 153,481 vehicles running red lights. About 42 percent resulted in a $50 fine, and the city collected $2.5 million. Read more in our report: Have red-light cameras made Virginia Beach streets safer?

Key Terms
Safe right turn on red: An officer dismissed the violation after viewing the video and determining that the driver made a safe right turn on red.
Police discretion and invalid offense: The reviewing officer dismissed the violation, often because the driver triggered the camera, but stopped after the stop bar and did not endanger anyone.
Emergency vehicles: The violation was dismissed because it involved an emergency vehicle, like a police car, ambulance or fire truck, responding to an emergency with its lights and sirens on.
City vehicles: The violation involved a city or government vehicle and was dismissed from the system, but turned over to the appropriate agency or department to decide whether to discipline the driver.
Red Light Cameras
Red Light Cameras are a big money item for these Cities. But if these Cities are going to use them then they ought to use them the right way. If City Employees are going thru these lights. Then they need to be paying for the ticket like John or Joan Q. Public is doing. The Virginia General Assembly should do away with red light cameras altogether. I am tired of Big Brother watching me everytime I sneeze.
I think they're a great idea....
and I wish Connecticut, where I am unfortunately stuck at the moment, would install a few. They'd make a fortune up here!
RED LITE CAMERA
I have been told that you do not have to do anything in regards to the citation if you get one because there cannot be a guarantee that you rec'd tje citation in the mail and if you do receive it and request a court date, you cannot question your accuser because it is a camera so therefore you cannot be found guilty!! Has anyone else heard of this?? Sounds right to me!
Traffic Light Cameras; Pedestrian Crosswalks
I like the traffic light cameras. They don't impede drivers doing the right thing and I think they'll reduce red-light-runners and the rolling-no-complete-stop right-turn-on-red drivers. It will make our streets safer.
Now, let's do something about getting drivers to stop for pedestrians in crosswalks without traffic light controls. It appears Norfolk has it under control on Colley Ave in Ghent; let's do the same at the Beach resort area.
City vehicles?
I want to know if the violating drivers were fined/fired? Were they reprimanded? Does King Will know about $2.5 million?
City Vechiles do not have to boey the law???
Isn't the purpose of the law and the fines, points, etc. to provide safer roads for us to drive on? Is it less safe for me to run a red light than a city (non-emergency) vehicle?
This policy is just plain wrong!!
is it just me??/
or do the numbers not add up??
